Description/Objectives

The objective of this class is to introduce the participant the marketing practices of the sports organizations.  The intent is to review the terminology, systems, techniques, and processes that are used in this specialized application of marketing and to encourage students to consider how traditional marketing strategies may be applied to this substantial and growing industry.

The class is conducted in seminar format.  This means class discussions are highly interactive and class participation is anticipated and expected.  Time will be specifically devoted to the discussion of the topics listed on the scheduled, however, they will not necessarily be limited to these issues.  Guest speakers will also be invited to add diversity to class discussions.

Primary Research
Each class member will take part in a research project related to the class.  This may involve in-class tasks and/or a limited amount of out-of-class data collection.

Hints For Success
1.    Attendance and participation are highly recommended.
2.    Purchase and read the text, the Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal, and
the Team Marketing Report.  This material will not necessarily be covered in class.

Grading/Evaluation

There are three (3) in-term exams.  No make ups, or early or late, exams will be given.  DO NOT MISS AN EXAM! The multiple-choice questions and True-False are designed to test your knowledge of both lecture material and the class readings.

 Tests                               90 pts.
 Primary Research Project  10 pts.

Grades (+/-) will be determined using the traditional FSU scale.  Any adjustments (curves) will not be made until after all grades are compiled and, if appropriate, the overall mean grades and standard deviations will be used in such calculations.  In class unannounced attendance quizzes will be given and treated as bonus points.  That is, all students present and taking a quiz will receive a one percentage point bonus on his/her next exam.  No quiz make-ups are given for any reason; it is simply my way to reward attendance. In addition, you must be in class at the time the quiz is distributed to receive credit.  Students arriving after the quiz is announced will not receive credit for the quiz.

Contact with Instructor

Any lapse of professional behavior, such as consistently arriving late or leaving class early, late arrival when we are having a guest speaker, talking while one of your colleagues is asking a question, failure to prepare for class, or repeatedly interrupting class with cellular phone rings, beepers, or watch alarms will not be tolerated.  All such devices should be turned off or on silent mode during class unless the professor approves your request to do otherwise.  Only in cases of emergencies (family illnesses, etc.) will such approval be granted.

Office Hours jcronin@cob.fsu.edu

Consultations with the professor are available during regular business hours by appointment.  In addition, I strongly encourage the use of “virtual office hours.”  Access by email is possible 24 hours a day at the address provided above.  Questions posed in this manner will be responded to ASAP (the same day unless I am out-of-town).  In addition, I will reserve time at the beginning and/or end of class to respond to email inquiries that require additional elaboration.
